Vocaloid is some sort of voice synthesizing program that was developed for enabling people to synthesize singing by typing in lyrics and stuff. The first generation of Vocaloids (Kaito and Meiko) came out a long time ago, while Vocaloid 2 was a bit more recent (starting with Hatsune Miku around August 2007).

It's been out for quite a while, and Kagamine Rin/Len were released at December 2007. Basically it got popular almost instantly with the release of Hatsune Miku in Japan, and it looks like the Vocaloid trend is just starting to come over here...*u*

The program got so popular there's even 2 mangas serializing right now on Comic Rush. XDDD
